Of all the places to take a stroll in the Ruhrgebiet, none attracts more pedestrians than the Westenhellweg. Together with the Ostenhellweg this old trading route runs through Dortmund city centre like a pulsing vein. When Dortmund was still a Hanseatic city, wagons rolled along here laden with salt and silk, because back in the Middle Ages, the only free imperial city in Westphalia was already regarded as an important centre of trade. Today, Dortmund's centre - as a shopping metropolis in the eastern Ruhrgebiet at the intersection of the former trading routes of Hellweg and Hansalinie - offers everything to make a shopping fan's heart beat faster. A successful mixture of chain stores, department stores and specialist shops lends this mile its charm.
