The Japanese city Hiroshima was destroyed on August 6th 1945 by the first atom bomb to be dropped on an inhabited area. More than 200,000 people died. To remember this event this square was officially dedicated on August 5th 2000. The bronze figure of "Mother Hiroshima" created by Anselm Treese had already been standing here for many years.
