The trees in the Fredenbaumpark could tell about history, as some of them have been growing here for more than a century. This park is an active, large and green oasis. There is a lake with boat rentals and one for model boats, and visitors can play curling, mini golf, beach volleyball, or table tennis. The posted running trails as well as a 3-km course for inline skaters are popular. A music pavilion and restaurant are also available. The Big Tepee is as high as the venerable trees. This adventure tent originally stood at the Expo 2000 and is now an attraction in the city's oldest recreation park. During the summer, the Fredenbaum Park becomes the venue for some open air spectacles

Die Geburtsstunde der ca. 68 Hektar großen Parkanlage schlug 1862, als die Stadt Dortmund begann, den damaligen ‚Stadtwald Westerholz’, der schon zuvor mit seinen Spazierwegen als Erholungsgebiet diente, für Veranstaltungen zu nutzen. Mit der Entwicklung des Dortmunder Nordens zum Industrie- und Wohngebiet wurde der ‚Stadtwald Westerholz’ seit den 1880er Jahren zu einem stark besuchten Naherholungsziel, nicht zuletzt wohl aufgrund der schlechten Wohnverhältnisse in diesem Stadtteil. Erst nach 1904 wurde aber, auf der Grundlage der Entwurfskonzeptionen eines Wettbewerbs für die ‚Gartenbau-Ausstellung für Westfalen und die Fürstentümer Lippe’, mit dem Ausbau zu einem Stadtpark begonnen. Die Beliebtheit der Anlage nahm noch zu, als 1912 der ‚Lunapark’ mit Rodelbahn, Mühle, Springbrunnen, Wasserrutschbahn und Tanzzelt entstand und bis in die späten 1920er Jahre eine große Attraktion darstellte. Nach dem Rückgang der Besucherzahlen wurden 1940 sämtliche Einrichtungen des Parks abgerissen, anderes wurde im 2. Weltkrieg zerstört.
