With a height of nearly six metres the giraffe is the tallest animal in the world. Usually at home in the steppes of Africa, this animal also likes living in Dortmund. A number of living specimens can be found in the Dortmund Zoo. In addition you can find in Dortmund- Wickede the only - privately run - Giraffe Museum in Germany, which has been collecting giraffes in all forms, sizes and materials for over 15 years. The interest is not zoological, these giraffes are made from wood, ceramics, cloth or synthetic materials and the collection shows how man-made giraffes have found a place in our culture. Pictures of giraffes decorate such mundane items as coffee mugs, teapots, stamps and jewellery, even children's toys come in the form and shape of this lovely giant of the savannah. The over 10,000 exhibits come in all sizes, from small earrings of only a few millimetres to a 5.85 metres high specimen adorning the collector's front garden.
