This “mansion of labour” provides some of the most attractive evidence of the city’s industrial past. In 1968 the Zollern Colliery was shut down and only spared from demolition because of its unusual architecture. The onion domes and gothic brickwork are impressive, as are the engine house with its Art Nouveau doorway. The former mine is now the in Westphalia-Lippe. This is the place to discover how miners once lived between the pit and their housing colonies.
